Form W-7: Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
Used by people who need a US taxpayer identification number but are not eligible for a Social Security number, to apply for or renew an ITIN.
What Form W-7 is for
Form W-7 is the application for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, the nine digit number the IRS issues to people who need one for US tax purposes but cannot get a Social Security number. It is usually sent with the federal tax return the number is needed for, together with original identity documents or copies certified by the issuing agency, or it is submitted through an IRS authorised Certifying Acceptance Agent. The same form renews an expired ITIN.
