What a document says about itself
A PDF carries fields most people never look at, and they travel with the file when you send it.
The author field is often a person's full name
Set once in Word years ago and carried into every export since.
The producer names the software and version
Harmless on its own, and it tells a reader what you used and roughly when.
Dates show when it was made and last changed
A document presented as new with a creation date from last year invites a question.
Clear it and set a title when you are sending outside
A sensible title is what a reader sees in their browser tab, and it is better than a filename made of digits.
Where this is the wrong tool. This reads and clears the document properties. It does not remove content from inside the pages, and it does not remove data embedded in images placed in the document. For a file that must be stripped of everything, use Sanitise.
When the browser is not enough
Scanly for Android
Take document-scanning workflows to your Android phone with Scanly. See the Google Play listing for current features, requirements and data-processing information.
Questions
What is actually in there?
Usually a title that is not the title, the author field of whoever's template it started from, the name of the software that wrote it, and two timestamps. On a scan, often the make and model of the scanner. None of it shows on the page and all of it travels with the file.
Does removing it change the pages?
No. The pages are untouched. Only the document information fields are cleared.
Is this enough to anonymise a document?
No, and that is worth being blunt about. This clears the document fields. It does not remove a name written in the text, a signature in an image, an XMP packet some writers embed separately, or anything in the page content itself. Treat it as a good clean rather than a forensic one.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is read and rewritten inside this page.
