How it works

Numbering a document other people will refer to
Page numbers matter most when someone else has to find a page: a court bundle, a visa application, a tender or a long report.
Merge first, then number
Numbering each part separately gives you several page ones. Put the whole bundle together with Merge PDF, then number it once.
Use Page 1 of 12 when a page could go missing
A total on every page tells the reader straight away whether anything is missing, which is why application packs and bundles often ask for it.
Leave the cover blank
Choose to leave the first page blank and numbering starts on the next page. Set the starting number to 2 if the cover should still count.
Pick a position the pages leave empty
Numbers are added on top of whatever is there. If your pages already carry a centred footer, put the number in a corner instead.
Where this is the wrong tool. The numbers are drawn on top of each page. If a page already has something in that position the two will overlap, so check a page or two and choose another position if they do.

Questions
Can I leave the cover page without a number?
Yes. Choose to leave the first page blank and numbering begins on the second page, starting at whatever number you set.
Can I start at a number other than 1?
Yes. Type the starting number, which is useful when the PDF is one part of a longer bundle.
Are the numbers searchable?
Yes. They are drawn as real text, so they print cleanly and a search of the document finds them.
What about pages that are turned sideways?
Each number is placed on the page as you see it, so a sideways scan still gets its number at the bottom, the right way up.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The numbers are added in your browser.
